More and more people are discovering their neurodivergent identities in adulthood, but our health care system makes it hard to find support. Most of the supports out there start and end in childhood and standard therapies for adults don’t fully consider the sensory, executive functioning, or social differences experienced by neurodivergent adults.
-
Work-related burnout is one thing. Neurodivergent burnout is an entirely different beast. This injury in your nervous system happens when demands exceed your neurological capacity. It can lead to skill loss, exhaustion, and isolation. You’ve pushed through for so long but now your body is demanding rest and recovery.
-
Avoiding tasks is not quite as simple as it sounds. Your fight/flight response is activated any time you’re confronted with demands that challenge your independence in any way. Your nervous system is demanding autonomy.
Find ways to gain control of your responses and insert more autonomy into your everyday demands.
-
Increased sensitivity is a hallmark of burnout and accommodating your sensory needs is an essential burnout prevention strategy. But navigating this for the first time can be overwhelming and confusing.
-
The intersection of burnout and social differences can be complex to navigate for neurodivergent adults. There is typically a desire to connect with others, but masking takes a toll and social interactions start to cost more of your limited capacity. Social avoidance becomes self-preservation which can easily slip into isolation and depression.
-
Planning ahead, following routines, time management… It’s never one-size-fits-all.
Many neurodivergent brains operate with a monotropic processing style - they’re driven toward flow states and hyperfocus. It’s an incredible asset in some contexts, but can become a challenge when it’s time to switch tasks, plan ahead, or make decisions. In OT, we will work together to build systems that work just for you.
-
With a better understanding of your needs, you can learn how to accommodate yourself throughout your daily life by integrating things like sensory tools, breaks, time limits, visual supports and more.
Learning to advocate for the accommodations you need is an essential skill to prevent burnout and improve overall wellness. OT can help you plan around your needs and create self-advocacy scripts to help you feel more prepared.
